What is ETIAS? Europe’s New Travel Authorization
Europe is one of the most visited continents in the world, but travelling there can be confusing. Trying to understand what the European Union is, how long you can stay in the Schengen zone and how the new ETIAS visa waiver works can feel like a puzzle.
Good news: these rules are pretty simple once you understand them. With enough planning, your next trip to Europe will go smoothly. This guide will help you understand the changes coming for travel to Europe and how they affect you.
What is the ETIAS visa waiver?
ETIAS (Europe Travel Information and Authorization System) was created to improve safety in the EU for locals and visitors. The program was supposed to launch in 2021, then 2023, then 2024. It’s now scheduled to start in the last quarter of 2026.
The ETIAS visa waiver is designed to make travelling to Europe easier for citizens of non-EU and visa-free countries. While it’s an electronic travel authorization, it’s not a visa for the Schengen Area.
The ETIAS works much like the ESTA for the US and the eTA for Canada, allowing travel for business or tourism. It’s not a substitute for a student or working visa. You’ll need to provide basic information such as your name, place of birth, nationality, and passport number to apply.

Restrictions
When travelling on an ETIAS visa, you can stay in any Schengen Area country for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. You’re not allowed to take paid work during your stay. To stay longer than 90 days or to work, you must obtain a visa from the appropriate embassy or consulate.
ETIAS doesn’t guarantee entry into any Schengen Area countries. Entry can still be refused for reasons such as false documents, criminal records, or security risks.
Requirements
To apply, you’ll need a valid passport (valid for at least 3 months after your return date), an email address for delivery, and a credit/debit card for payment. On the form, you’ll be asked for general information like:
- name (first, middle, last)
- maiden name (if applicable)
- date and place of birth
- nationality
- gender
How to apply
Applying is simple. You’ll complete an online form with basic information, such as your name, contact details, and passport details. The fee is €20 for individuals 18-70. There’s no fee for minors and those over 70.
Once you complete the online form, European authorities will process and verify it. It can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few days. You’ll get an email when it’s been approved. In some cases, your application can take up to four weeks, and you might be asked to provide additional information.
Documents you’ll need when travelling
When travelling, you need to carry two documents at all times: your passport and your ETIAS authorization. Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended travel date and include the same information as on your application form. Your ETIAS authorization must be presented upon entry to any country in the Schengen Area.
You may also be asked to provide additional documents, such as proof of accommodation and travel insurance, when border control requests them.
